A practical phonics training session to start the 2018-19 programme

The Chepping View Primary Academy SCITT trainees enjoyed a very practical and engaging training session last Friday about the teaching of phonics from Mandi Feltham, Castlefield School, High Wycombe. Her session covered an explanation of systematic synthetic phonics and how it is used to teach early reading, useful terminology, progression through the phases of the Letters and Sounds programme and a wealth of exciting hands-on activities to use in the classroom.

The highlight of the day was observing Mandi deliver two phonics sessions to small groups of Year 1 children so the trainees could actually see what phonics looks like in practice.

Positive feedback from the training included:

“an excellent explanation of the different phases and the four parts of the lesson”

“viewing the live lessons was particularly helpful to see the theory put into practice”

“there were lots of useful ideas for planning and making phonics exciting and engaging”

What a great start to the 2018-19 programme!
